Dec. 5, 2005 - Power full make up

Make Your Face Look Slimmer

Use your make up blusher cleverly to slim down chubby cheeks

  • Purchase two shades of blush, one of a deeper shade and one that's lighter. To ensure the shades go together, purchase a compact with two coordinating shades.
  • Apply your usual foundation make-up or powder to cover any imperfections and even out your skin tone.
  • Apply the lighter shade of blush in circular motions onto the apples of your cheeks... how do you to find your apples? Just smile!
  • Next, following the line of your cheekbones, apply a sheer sweep of the deeper shade of blush.
  • Blend, blend and blend. The key with this trick is to create dimension, but you do not want a very obvious demarcation between your natural cheek color and the blush (i.e. think stripes!).
  • Sweep a small amount of the lighter shade across your nose and/or forehead as desired to add an extra "glow" to your complexion.

Aug. 31, 2005 - WHAT NOT TO WEAR

What Not to Wear isn't about the latest fashions, it's about teaching people about personal style, dressing for their shape, and personality and learning how to make the most of their natural assets.

      Body Shape
    1. Get naked. Then stand in front of a mirror, and ask yourself what you love about your body and what you hate. The things you hate are what will hide; the things you love are the things you can afford to show off. Be honest and objective. What you hate might be the envy of your best friend (consider Susannah's big breasts!)

    2. Flat-chested: Most women who are flat-chested have a tendency to carry their weight on their bum. So, show off those arms with a lovely sleeveless round neck top. Most importantly, don't make tits that aren't there. Just accept it and if want to be sexy (and you are in your 30s), show a bit of nipple, gently.

    3. Pear-shaped: Never wear jackets that cut you across the arse. Either wear a jacket that ends at the waist (to show your bum off) or wear one to the knee (to cover it up).

    4. Short-waisted with long legs: If you have a short body and long legs, chances are you have big tits. Pull up the breasts with a really good bra so they won't accentuate your short waist. Also, wear short jackets that hit the hip-bone.

    5. Long body with short legs: Never wear cropped trousers; they make your legs shorter. Layer your top half. Like Trinny, wear a long t-shirt under a sweater to break up your long back. Don't forget to keep your trousers very long, and wear a higher heel to put yourself back in proportion.

    6. Large-size: Don't tent yourself and don't be afraid to wear tighter clothes. Try a plunging neckline to show off your beautiful décolleté.

    7. Short neck: Buy deep V or low fronted tops. High necks will only make your neck look shorter.

    8. Broad shoulders and slim hips: Buy flat-fronted long trousers and skirts cut on the bias.

    Apr. 30, 2005 - Jeans Appeal

Denim is everywhere this season, from the hat on your head to the shoes on your feet, and yet finding the perfect pair of jeans still overwhelms us.

Choosing classic or trendy - If you live in your jeans, classic styles like relaxed fit transfer well from year to year. If you prefer a hipper look, the must-haves for women are anything super-low. What's great about them is that because they sit on your hips, they work for many different body types. If you’re a little on the shy side, try a pair of boy-cut jeans, which won’t reveal as much of your mid-section.

Feeling the stretch - Another trend this season is the body-hugging jean, emphasizing a sleek and sexy look. With the renewed popularity of stretch denim this fall, there’s something for everyone.

The beauty of stretch is that you can wear your jeans a lot tighter without sacrificing comfort. It makes low rise jeans, for example, much easier to wear as they hug your body and don’t feel as rigid – they move with you.

Working with your body - Just because a pair of jeans looks great on your same-size friend doesn’t mean they are right for you. Like with any piece of clothing, you really need to try jeans on to see how they work.

If you have curvy hips and are proud of them, Clarkson suggests a super-low boot-cut jean, which sits well on the hips and shows off your figure. Women who want a little room in the thighs and calves should look at styles that don't hug the body, such as relaxed fit or boy-cut jeans. And for extra room in the seat, try jeans with a low waist, low pockets and a bit of a flare around the ankle.

Singing the blues - With a large variety of washes, choosing the ideal shade for your blue jeans can be tricky. But thanks to this season’s to-dye-for look, your task may be easier. "The must-have colour is simply dark with a lot of texturing," notes Clarkson. Look for inky indigos, which can be dressed down for casual wear and dressed up for a night out. To keep your dark denim looking its best, try washing your jeans inside out in cold water and not using the full dry cycle.

Of course you want your jeans to look good, but remember that they should feel good as well.

    Apr. 26, 2005 - How to Eat...

  • Eat only at the table. Don't munch on the couch or at the kitchen counter.
  • Don't starve yourself! Skipping meals only tricks your body into thinking its survival is threatened, and it will hold onto its fat stores for dear life.
  • Eat slowly and chew each bite completely to decrease your appetite.
  • Eat three small meals and two snacks daily instead of two or three huge meals.
  • Don't eat anything for the last three or four hours of your day. Once you've had dinner, be done for the night.
  • Don't eat anything unnecessary. You don't need "all the fixings".
  • Learn to control yourself at social affairs. Don't use them as an excuse to pig out. Be strong.
  • Serve yourself normal portions of food. Three ounces of meat or a half cup of rice are plenty in one meal.
  • Don't nibble on things throughout the day. Some titbits contain hundreds of calories.
  • Use a smaller plate than usual for dinner. You'll feel like you ate more than you actually did.
  • Don't work while eating. Separate all of your activities from your meals, so you can concentrate on what and how much you're eating.
  • Beware of the wall you may hit at 3:00 p.m. Many people feel the urge for a caffeine or sugar lift at this time. Have some fruit or crackers on hand to combat this.
  • Don't eat a single bite while preparing meals. Chew gum, if it helps.
  • Never get seconds. Make a habit of stopping after one plate of food.
  • Put leftovers away immediately to avoid further grazing.
  • Read labels carefully. Some low fat items are very high in calories.
  • To slow yourself down, eat with the opposite hand you usually eat with.

    Apr. 23, 2005 - Womens Health Tips

Daily calcium - To get the recommended 1,000-1,200 mg of calcium per day, women should consume three servings of milk products (1portion=1 cup/250 mL of milk, 6 oz/175 g of yogurt or 1 oz/45 g of cheese). If you don’t like milk products, you can replace each of the three portions with a 300 mg calcium supplement and try other sources of calcium.

Sleep stealers - Beware of factors that rob you of a good night’s sleep: Arguments before bedtime, caffeine, sugar, vitamin C and intense exercise. To relax, take a hot bath, drink a cup of herbal tea or a glass of milk and read. A drop of lavender or orange oil on your sheets can also help bring sweet slumber.

Growing bones - Gardening is a great exercise for building bone density because of all the bending and lifting. Taking care of your flowers just once a week can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium intake and age - A woman in her 20s needs about 1,000 mg of calcium a day. By her 30's a woman’s bones stop growing, so it’s wise to build a reserve of bone and calcium that’ll be needed in the future. Exercise can help. Women in their 40's can start to lose bone density. Dairy foods, leafy green vegetables, fish, and even non-dairy products that are fortified with calcium help to boost calcium-intake.

Cut the caffeine - Your chances of developing an irritated bladder can double if you’re drinking more than four cups of caffeinated coffee each day. Caffeine in tea, chocolate and cola are also irritants.

    Apr. 15, 2005 - TALKING ABOUT NAILS...

Your nails may be craving something - If your nails are weak, splitting, fragile etc, the problem could be traced back to an inadequate water intake.

Most people don't drink nearly enough water. Drink up!

What to do about brittle nails

The most common nail wreckers are harsh detergents and water, which can stress nail fibers. So be sure to put rubber gloves on while you clean or do dishes.

Also, avoid using perfume lotions that usually contain alcohol if your nails are brittle. It will only make your nails worse.

It may be possible that your calcium intake is low, as well.
How To Give Yourself A Manicure

Whether you prefer your nails to be long or short, they can still look stunning with a little know-how.

    • Wash and dry your hands.
    • Using a double-sided emery board, file nails using a gentle stroke. Avoid corners of your nails as this can weaken them.
    • Begin to shape your nails. The most popular shape to use is oval, but choose what is most suited to your hand and finger shape.
    • Check to see how well you have done. Run your nails over an old pair of pantyhose. Your nails should not snag the hose.
    • Apply a softener to your cuticles. Allow to site for a minute or so.
    • Transfer hands to a bowl of warm water and soak for an additional few minutes.
    • Gently push back the cuticles. This should not be painful. If hangnails are present, carefully clip them.
    • Apply hand lotion and begin to massage the palm of your hand with the thumb of your other hand. This will help to circulate the blood. Work your way over the remainder of the hand and then repeat giving equal time to the other hand.
    • Before color is applied to nails, they must be cleaned and the easiest way to do this is with an orange stick that has been wrapped with cotton. Dip into nail polish remover and then rub over the surface of the nail. Check the nail for any creamy residue. When none remains, your nails will be ready for polishing.
    • Time for color. Pick up a small amount of polish on your brush and paint one stroke down the center of your nail. Your brush should hold just enough color to accomplish this. Stroke the sides of the nail and you are done. The nail should be completely colored in three strokes. Allow to set for a minute or so before applying the second coat.
    • Wait until polish is set (dry to the touch) and then apply the top coat. Don't skip this step as it not only adds life to your manicure, it will protect your nails as well.
    • Sanitize all of your equipment with alcohol and when they are dry, store them away until the next manicure.

    Nail Tips:

    • Nail polish can be stored in the fridge.
    • If your nail polish is too thick, try thinning with a polish thinner.
    • To prevent the cap from sticking, coat it with a little Vaseline to prevent this from happening.

    Apr. 12, 2005 - Hair Care Tips

    Hair helper

Interested in trying out sculpting mud for your hair? Make sure you use a minimal amount of product to prevent weighing hair down. A good rule of thumb is to put a little bit on your fingertips and apply to the hair from the back of the head forward.

    Hair clean-up

An all-natural way to eliminate shampoo build-up and toxins in your hair is with apple cider vinegar. Rinse your hair once a week with one cup of apple-cider vinegar, found in grocery stores or health stores.

    Hair styling fact

Hair sets best as it is cooling, not when it is heated up from blow-drying. Whether using hot rollers or a blow dryer, apply hair spray after hair has cooled to maximize the style.

    Salon style hair

Want to achieve that salon style blowout at home? Separate your damp hair into several sections and blow-dry one at a time using a round or paddle brush. Taking the time to focus on each section will give you that overall salon look.

    Applying Foundation

    • Use a foundation with a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 to prevent future skin damage.
    • Your foundation should match your face and neck, so don't try it on your hand or arm for color a match.
    • You will probably need a different shade of foundation for each season, so don't use the same one all year long. Blending colors sometimes is the only way to get a perfect match.
    • Don't forget to apply foundation on your eyelids, lips and into your neck for a more natural look. This also is a good setting for eye shadow and lipstick and helps it stay on longer.
    • For clear complexions, sometimes all you need is a tinted moisturizer for a natural look.
    • Liquid foundation is usually water based and is best for dry skin. Use a sponge or your fingers to blend from the nose, out.
    • Liquid foundation can settle and separate, so remember to shake it up before use.
    • Apply loose translucent powder with a large cosmetics brush to "set" your foundation and keep it from running in hot and humid weather.
    • For dry skin, apply a light moisturizer before your foundation.
    • Powder foundation is ideal for oily skin and will help reduce shine.
    • Use a concealer for those nasty blemishes and pat lightly with pressed powder.
    • If your foundation is too heavy, add a couple drops of moisturizer to thin.
    • After applying make up, go outside or near a window to check for blunders.
