Nickelback

About Nickelback

The core of the band hails from Hanna, Alberta. They are now based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Nickelback's was helped early on by Cancon, the Canadian law requiring a certain percentage of music played on Canadian radio to be from Canadian musical artists. Their second album, The State, propelled them to the mainstream with two Top 10 hits and the follow up album Silver Side Up, with 2002's most-played single How You Remind Me, gave them superstar status, scoring multi-format smashes on every album since.

Silver Side Up was released on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. On that morning, they were on their tour bus traveling across Pennsylvania less than 10 miles from where Flight 93 crashed. The first single, "How You Remind Me", became an anthem of sorts in memory of the fallen Americans on 9/11.

Criticism

Nickelback are also heavily criticized as commercial sellouts by grunge fans because of their simple radio-friendly sound, which makes frequent use of digital post-processing. Many fans of Nickelback argue that it is tough to judge the band by their singles, as is the case with many mainstream bands.

Critics have often pointed out that "How You Remind Me", a Nickelback song that received extensive airplay in 2001 and 2002, and "Someday", a popular song in 2003, are almost identical except for lyrical content. A clever mash-up combined the two songs into a single track, "How You Remind Me of Someday", which has circulated the Internet for years on humor sites and music messageboards.

The band was booed offstage at a Portuguese heavy metal Music festival. Feeling they didn't fit with the genre of the other bands at the festival Nickelback was reluctant to do the show; however, despite the predictable result, the money they were offered was so substantial that they couldn't turn it down. Chad Kroeger's inquired to the hecklers, "Are there any Nickelback fans in Portugal?" The lackluster response led to him and Vikedal displaying a vulgar hand gesture and leaving the stage after only a few songs.(source)

Unreleased Dimebag Solo Included On Nickelback's Tribute Song

A previously unreleased solo by late Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell will appear this fall in an unlikely place: on Nickelback's new album, All the Right Reasons. The guitar parts for the flailing, 24-second lead were donated by Darrell's brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, and assembled from outtakes from the Pantera albums Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven.

The song, a tribute to Darrell titled "Side of a Bullet," was written three months after the guitarist was killed while performing onstage with Damageplan in Columbus, Ohio. Kroeger first penned the song's aggressive, metallic riff, then wrote call-and-response lyrics from the perspective of a Pantera fan so enraged over Dimebag's murder that he vows revenge, not realizing the shooter had already been killed by a policeman.

Once Kroeger finished demoing "Side of a Bullet," he called up Paul and played it to him to get his take on the tune. Paul liked what he heard and urged Kroeger to write lyrics about Dime. "I said, 'Well, funny enough, that song is about your brother,' " Kroeger recalled.

Paul volunteered to play on the song, so Kroeger overnighted him the tape and encouraged him to record a new drum track over the one played by Nickelback drummer Daniel Adair. "He thought about it for a while," Kroeger said, "then he decided that Daniel had done such an amazing job that we should leave it the way it was. That's when he sent the guitar parts from Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven, which we used for the solo."

Kroeger was introduced to Dimebag and Paul in 2002 in
Dallas by former Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who was touring as Nickelback's opening act. A few drinks later, the ex-Pantera members admitted to Kroeger that they were big fans. "Vinnie told me he listened to Nickelback every day, which really surprised me," Kroeger said. "But I guess they come from that whole Southern-rock background, and we're a hard-rock band with Southern-rock influences, so they liked it a lot."

Nickelback Go The John Mellencamp Route For New Video

There's a song on Nickelback's forthcoming fifth album, All the Right Reasons, called "Photograph." It's a mid-paced melodious rocker about the mistakes we make and those milestone moments we experience as confused, mixed-up teenagers as we

<A TARGET="_new" HREF="http://ad.doubleclick.net/click%3Bh=v5|32d7|3|0|%2a|r%3B19489609%3B0-0%3B2%3B4389093%3B4252-336|280%3B11660430|11678326|1%3B%3B%7Esscs%3D%3fhttp://www.schooliscoming.com"><IMG SRC="http://m.2mdn.net/824418/old_navy_school_336x280mtv.jpg" BORDER=0></A>

struggle to figure out what life's all about.

So when it came time to start thinking about a video for the track, it felt natural, according to frontman Chad Kroeger, that the foursome return to their old stomping grounds and film the clip in Hanna, Alberta.

"The song really [has] the small town in mind, or your high school or that first girl you kissed, whatever those memories may be," he explained. "So it seemed obvious to go back to our hometown and shoot it there, which turned out to be a lot of fun. We got to see faces we hadn't seen for 12 years. The mayor came out and he's in the video. Everyone seemed really happy we were there, and that we didn't forget about Hanna."

There was one person in particular, though, who Kroeger said he hasn't forgotten and who showed up for the "Photograph" shoot: his high school principal, the man he'd spent a lot of time with during his awkward teen years.

"[The video] has that whole John Cougar Mellencamp vibe to it — we did some shooting in the old high school gym, and we saw the principal that always used to suspend me," Kroeger said. "We made up. But I broke into that school 11 times. In the song I say, 'Criminal record says I broke in twice/ I must have done it half a dozen times.' It was actually 11. Now, it's sort of funny. The principal laughs about it and it's no big deal. But when I was in court, he didn't think it was so funny."

On October 4, Nickelback will issue All the Right Reasons, the follow-up to 2003's The Long Road; it's an 11-track, self-produced LP that features the band's newest member, former 3 Doors Down drummer Daniel Adair. The album satisfied Kroeger's hankering for instrumental experimentation, as Nickelback incorporated various orchestral elements into several of the disc's songs.

"In the past, Nickelback hadn't looked at any instrument other than drums, bass, guitar, vocals," he explained. "We wanted to be a meat-and-potatoes band. But the more you start writing different types of songs, the more you realize those textures sound really nice in those songs. So we had string sections come in and play on certain parts of songs, and the real taboo for Nickelback was piano." Pause. "Then we heard piano in a Nickelback song. We loved it, and actually used it twice on the album."

Those two songs are "Savin' Me" and "If Everyone Cared," a PG-rated number that Kroeger said is about a couple so enamored with one another that, in one shared moment, they realize how much better this world would be if everyone in it could experience the feelings they have for each other.

Then there's "Fight for All the Wrong Reasons," this album's answer — lyrically, that is — to "Figured You Out."

"There are a lot of references to fornication in that song," Kroeger said. "There is nothing we're afraid to sing about or say in a song, as long as it's kind of clever or wink, wink, tongue-in-cheek. It just helps to paint that picture and tell the story better. If you're going to cover everything and hide behind metaphors, you're not doing a decent job telling the story."

Nickelback will launch a North American tour in support of the new album in October.

"Worthy To Say"

They usually come around about 10 o'clock
You can hear them
You can tell them by the way they knock
Somebody said the other one had a badge
Who told ya, Who told ya
How bout if I stay and you run away
Well come on back and try to get some today
Well somebody's gonna do it again
Gonna make me turn against all of my friends
So you better have something damn worthy to say

They're growin dope everywhere around the block
You can smell it
You can tell by the way they talk
Somebody stole five for gasoline
Who told ya, Who told ya

How bout if I stay and you run away
Well come on back and try to get some today
Well somebody's gonna do it again
Gonna make me turn against all of my friends
So you better have something damn worthy to say

I'll never do it again (No I wont)
Lets settle it (We dont)
I can't afford my life cause I'm spending it
Since you got just what you wanted

We never do anything anymore
One on the telephone, one on the door
Somebody said revenge was served sweeter cold
I told ya, I told ya
They're growing dope everywhere around the block
You can smell it you can tell it by the way they talk
Somebody stole five for gasoline
Who told ya, Who told ya

How bout if I stay and you run away
Well come on back and try to get some today
Well somebody's gonna do it again
Gonna make me turn against all of my friends
So you better have something damn worthy to say

I'll never do it again (No I wont)
Let's settle it (We dont)
I can't afford my life cause I'm spending it
Since you got just what you wanted

I'll never do it again (No I won't)
Praise myself (I don't)
I can't afford my life cause I'm spending it
Since you got just what you wanted
What you wanted

Nickelback is a hard rock band founded in western Canada in 1995. The name derived from the nickel in change Mike Kroeger frequently had to give customers back in his job at a Starbucks coffee shop.

The core of the band hails from Hanna, Alberta. They are now based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Nickelback's climb to mainstream was helped by the Canadian law that requires a certain percentage of music played on Canadian radio to be from Canadian bands. Their second album, "The State," propelled them to mainstream status even before Silver Side Up.

Nickelback has achieved major success on rock radio, scoring 10 Top 10 hits since 1999. They have also crossed over to mainstream radio, scoring multi-format smashes on last two albums. Critics have often pointed out that "How You Remind Me", a Nickelback song that received extensive airplay in 2001, and "Someday", a popular song in 2003, are almost perfectly identical except for lyrical content. It should be particularly noted that Chad Kroeger has supposedly perfected the "marlboro" voice. In Silver Side Up, Nickelback did something that not many bands do by recreating their own song with Just For. Some bands issue remixes or live versions of songs but Nickelback rerecorded a crunchier version of one of their more popular "Curb" songs.

In February of 2005, the band announced that drummer Ryan Vikedal had left for unknown reasons. In March, they announced that 3 Doors Down drummer Daniel Adair was taking his place, and that Nickelback will be entering the studio to record their follow up to The Long Road sometime in the fall, followed by a tour.

Figured You Out

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favorite damn disease

And I love the places that we go
And I love the people that you know
And I love the way you can't say "No"
Too many long lines in a row
I love the powder on your nose

And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out

Now I did, you wonder why
I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you're not impressed
While you put me to the test

I like the white stains on your dress
I love the way you pass the check
And I love the good times that you wreck

And I love your lack of self respect
While you're passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck

And I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out

Now I did, you wonder why
Why not before, you never tried
Gone for good, and this is it

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favorite damn disease

And I hate the places that we go
And I hate the people that you know
And I hate the way you can't say "No"
Too many long lines in a row
I hate the powder on your nose

And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out

Now I did, you wonder why
Why not before, you never tried
Gone for good, and this is it

Canada's Nickelback started life as a cover band in Hanna, 215 kilometres northeast of Calgary. Eventually, they tired of playing other people's songs and singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger put together a bunch of original songs, borrowed 4,000 bucks off his stepfather, and went to big city Vancouver to record them in a friend's studio. Based on the results, Kroeger's guitarist brother, Mike, and pal bassist Ryan Vikedal all relocated to Vancouver in 1996; that same year, they recorded and released the EP Hesher and full-length Curb independently and embarked on a series of cross-country tours. The group's singer had spent two years selling advertising for a soccer magazine and now applied some of the skills he had learned to his band. He asked his friends to fax and phone radio stations to request their first single until it was played often enough for Nickelback to pick up fans on their own.

In late 1998, the band decided their managers were unable to bring them to the next level and started managing themselves. Mike Kroeger handled all the distribution, brother Chad handled all the radio tracking, and Ryan Vikedal handled all the bookings. The group had also invested $30,000 into a new album. The State was released independently in January 2000 during a slow rock period when Canadian content requirements were increased and local rock radio began desperately seeking out homegrown product. What they found was Nickelback's single "Leader of Men." Nickelback toured ceaselessly for The State and 200 shows later, the band had gone from virtual unknowns to playing in front of over a million people alongside the likes of Creed, 3 Doors Down, Fuel, and more. The band's post-grunge commercial appeal wasn't lost on the record industry and The State was snapped up by Roadrunner/Island, Def Jam in the U.S., and EMI in Canada. It eventually sold an impressive 500,000 copies.

Many of the songs that comprised the next album, Silver Side Up, were written even before The State was released in America and road-tested in front of eager audiences on cross-country treks. The other significant change about this set of songs was Chad Kroeger's conscious decision to write his lyrics in a more direct manner rather than the metaphoric and vague lyrics of previous releases. "Too Bad" was about the father who was never around when Chad and his brother were growing up. "Never Again" is a song inspired by broken homes. "How You Remind Me," the first single from the album, was written at rehearsals shortly before the band went into the studio.

To record the album, the band decided to work with producer Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog) at the same studio as The State, Vancouver's Green House. The album was completed in five short weeks and the 13 tracks were mixed by Randy Staub (Metallica, U2). The combination of Parashar and Staub, Nickelback's growing popularity, and the quality of the songs sent Silver Side Up into the sales charts around the world, spearheaded by the hit single "How You Remind Me." It was only the second time in history since the Guess Who's "American Woman" that a Canadian band had been number one on both the Canadian and U.S. rock charts at the same time. After their initial mainstream exposure, Kroeger produced Vancouver natives Default and colaborated with Saliva singer Josey Scott for the Spiderman soundtrack. In the summer of 2002, the band re-released Curb since it had fallen out of print years before. ~ Ed Nimmervoll, All Music Guide

An interview...

Q. Do you get recognized a lot on the street?

A. Sometimes, in the oddest places by the most bizarre people. There was some guy at the urinal beside me once who said, "Aren't you in Nickelback?" And I was like, "Yeah, can we talk about this in two minutes?"

Another time, we were in the mall, in a kids' clothing store to get something for my son, and this woman who's got to be 60 walks up and says, "Aren't you in Nickelback?" I wanted to say "how do you know that?"

The weirdest ones are when people come up to you and say, "Are you who I think you are?" How do I answer that?

Q. What do you have in your pockets?

A. (laughs) Nosy little bugger, aren't you? A knife . . . a big knife. No, actually, just a little jackknife, like a Swiss Army knife. Some cake, also known as cash, and in the little pocket, a guitar pick, just in case. I didn't bring my guitar, but if I had brought my guitar and not the pick, then I wouldn't have had a pick.

I always have a guitar pick. I'm kind of superstitious that way. I've got a guitar pick in every pair of pants I own.

Frist song I knew and Loved!

How You Remind Me

Never made it as a wise man
I couldn't cut it as a poor man stealin'
Tired of livin' like a blind man
I'm sick of sight without a sense of feeling
This is how you remind me
This is how you remind me of what I really am

It's not like you to say sorry, I was waiting on a different story
This time I'm mistaken for handing you a heart worth breaking
I've been wrong, I've been down, been to the bottom of every bottle
These five words in my head scream "are we havin' fun yet?"

It's not like you didn't know that
I said I love you and I swear I still do
And it must have been so bad
Cause livin' with me must have damn near killed you

This is how you remind me of what I really am
This is how you remind me of what I really am

It's not like you to say sorry, I was waiting on a different story
This time I'm mistaken for handing you a heart worth breaking
I've been wrong, I've been down, been to the bottom of every bottle
These five words in my head scream "are we havin' fun yet?"

Never made it as a wise man
I couldn't cut it as a poor man stealin'

This is how you remind me
This is how you remind me of what I really am

It's not like you to say sorry, I was waiting on a different story
