MANÁ

In an effort to renovate the band once again, it adopted the name MANÁ with Fher Olvera as vocalist and brothers Juan Diego and Ulises on the bass and guitar respectively. They were joined by the talent of a young Cuban-Colombian drummer, Alex “The Animal” Gonzalez. The name MANÁ, taken from a passage from the Bible, refers to the bread that fell from the heavens while in Polynesian it means “positive energy”. In 1986, after signing with Polygram records, the group’s new era was embodied in a new recording simply titled “MANÁ”. With a second wind and renewed energy, the band formed an important part of the musical movement known as “Rock in Your Language”, although things did not necessarily turn out so well due to the record company trying to change and adulterate the group’s musical essence as well as its image. This is a recurrent practice in the record industry, even today. In spite of this, the band kept on performing in different alternative forums in those days when Warner Music showed interest in their work and music. |

SOMBRERO VERDE
The history of MANÁ has its beginnings in the seventies in the streets of Guadalajara, at bars, parties and rock nightclubs around town. In 1980 Fernando Olvera, Ulises, Juan Diego and Abraham Calleros started a group called Green Hat and would interpret covers of the groups that inspired them such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Police, Credence Clear Water Revival and The Rolling Stones. Some time later the band changed its name to Sombrero Verde as well as its concept by including new original Spanish-language material in their repertory. A year later the band signed its first contract with the Ariola record label and cut their first album, “Sombrero Verde”; local guitarist Gustavo Orozco had joined the band by then. In 1983, the group launched its second record, “A Ritmo de Rock”, recorded for Fonovisa Company, although neither recording achieved the success they had hoped for.
