Never, ever, take crayons in the car, unless you enjoy scraping melted wax off upholstery. Markers aren't a good deal either, especially with preschoolers who may get bored and start coloring seats and other interior areas. Your best option for traveling: colored pencils. Never, ever, ignore a child who is complaining about an upset stomach in the car, especially when driving in mountainous areas or over rough terrain. Stop the car and let the child out for some fresh air and a drink of water. Before the trip, ask your child's doctor to recommend a motion-sickness drug, and then have some on hand. Added benefit: Motion sickness drugs usually help kids take a nice, long nap. Let each child pack a traveling bag with favorite toys and books. Include spiral bound notebooks so they can draw pictures with aformentioned colored pencils. Tape players with headphones are wonderful if you've got them. Rule out any toys that make annoying noises. Pack your own "surprise bag" with some new books, tapes, or small toys. Rather than hitting fast-food joints every two hours, pack healthy snacks and stop at rest areas every two hours. They can run, jump, play and snack. Always be sure your kids are safely buckled before hitting the road.
