Brown, K. Smith and Elam award winners at men’s basketball banquet
| Seniors Demetrius Brown, Kenny Smith and Alex Elam were the major award winners at the annual San Jose State University men’s basketball awards banquet.
Brown was named the recipient of the “Most Productive” award. The 6-foot-6 forward led the team in scoring and rebounding and was second on the team in blocked shots and steals.
Smith was named “Most Inspirational.” The 6-foot-4 swingman played in 20 games in 2005-06 after missing the entire 2004-05 season due to injury.
Elam received the “Leadership” award.
Brown, Elam, Kenny Smith, Carlton Spencer, Matt Misko, Menelik barbary, Tyree Gardner, Julian Richardson, Kevin Fleming, Jared Cozad, Devonte Thomas, Lance Holloway and Justonn Smith earned San Jose State letter awards. Nelson Garbutt received a San Jose State ‘certificate of participation.”

Spartan Road Show Returns to Orange County

Recap: Utah State vs. San Jose St
Nate Harris scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Utah State Aggies to a 76-69 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in the quarterfinal round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
Chaz Spicer added 15 points for Utah State (22-7), while David Pak contributed 12 points, and Jaycee Carroll tallied 11.
Demetrius Brown poured in a game-high 26 points and grabbed eight boards for SJSU (6-25), while Jared Cozad registered 13 points. Carlton Spencer chipped in 11 points and dished out nine assists in the setback.
The Aggies held San Jose State to a putrid 28.1 percent shooting effort from the floor in the opening frame to take a 37-25 lead into the break.
In the second stanza, Utah State shot an impressive 56.0 percent from the field en route to the seven-point victory.
The Aggies connected on 18-of-20 shots from the foul line in the contest, while San Jose State connected on just 8-of-13 shots from the charity stripe.
The second-seeded Aggies will now battle the third-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the Semifinals of the WAC Tournament. |

No. 24 Nevada 83, San Jose St. 60
Nick Fazekas had 20 points and 12 rebounds and No. 24 Nevada beat San Jose State 83-60 Thursday night to clinch the Western Athletic Conference title.
Marcelus Kemp scored 14 points, DeMarshay Johnson 12 and Kyle Shiloh 11 for Nevada (23-5, 12-4), which also won the WAC regular-season title last year and shared it with Texas-El Paso the year before. The Wolf Pack have won 10 straight. Demetrius Brown had 16 points and nine rebounds and Matt Misko 15 points for the Spartans (6-23, 2-13), who lost their seventh in a row.
It was the fifth consecutive double-double for Fazekas, who has 15 on the season. He entered the game ranked 16th in the nation in scoring at 21.6 points and 14th in rebounds at 10.3 per game.
Mo Charlo had eight rebounds and Ramon Sessions added eight assists and six rebounds for Nevada, which outscored the Spartans 15-4 over the last 7:36 of the first half and led 43-35 at halftime.
Nevada opened the second half with a 12-2 run, including two dunks and a 3-pointer by Fazekas for a 55-27 lead with 17:56 left.
The Spartans answered with a 9-0 run to pull to within 55-36 on Lance Holloway's basket. But the Wolf Pack scored the next six, including Lyndale Burleson's two free throws to go ahead 61-36 with 11:34 remaining.
Nevada shot 54 percent from the field, including 9-of-17 from 3-point range, compared to San Jose State's 30 percent shooting. |
