• Jan. 18, 2006 - Cleaning Feline Ears ( CATS)

When to clean a cat's ears, noticeable, when a cat scratches its ears, and shakes, its head. Useful, using a flashlight, looking into cat's ears, and observe, any spots of black or brown wax build up. A clear sign of mites, and ears need to be cleaned. Mites are microscopic parasites, and infest cat's ear canal. Common type of mites is Otodectes. Mites are very contagious, between other cats, and dogs. Very likely, if a pet has mites, other pets nearby or live in the same house, likely contract the same.

Methods for treatment, of mites, include purchasing an over the counter medication, mitecides. Treatment takes between three to four weeks and cleans infection.  Veterinarians, sometimes use injectable medication, called Ivermectin. Useful, when a cat is sensitive, having ears cleaned. However, small percentage of cats, reaction causes problems, for central nervous system.

Process, applying medication, into a cat ears: First wrapping feline, into a blanket or towel, preventing cat, from scratching, during application. Then squeezing between five to ten drops, into each ear. Then massage base of cat's ears. Medication moves down to the base of the ear canal, and thus, loosens any built up of mites. If cat starts shaking, its head helps move dirt, towards outer part of the ear. Afterwards, using a cotton swab, gently, and carefully, remove build up of dirt, accumulated.  Never, insert cotton swab, into ear canal, cause injury Ear Drum. Procedure, needs to be repeated, one or two times a day, at least one week, depending on how bad, cat is infested, with mites. At most, procedure lasts four weeks.

• Jan. 16, 2006 - Selecting a Cat Veterinarian

Some veterinarians are trained better, caring and treating cats or felines. Also, certain facilities or clinics cater exclusively for cats.  Preferably, select a cat veterinarian, before purchasing or adopting a cat and, not during an emergency. Foremost, best method finding a cat veterinarian, asking for referrals, from cat -- breeders, coworkers, neighbors, friends, relatives or people you know. Contacting your local shelters, and human societies, and cat rescue organizations, are good sources. Also, contact American Association of Feline Practitioners, by city, state or zip code. Members of this association are professional veterinarians, have increase knowledge of feline medicine, and surgery. Furthermore, association promotes feline research. E-mail Address: Info@aafponline.org.  Address: 203 Towne Centre Drive, Hillsborough, NJ 08844-4693. Telephone#:  800 - 204 - 3514.

Once, you have chosen a veterinarian, contact your local better business bureau, and State licensing board, determine any complaints filed, against the veterinarian or clinic.  Next, visit their facility, for your cat's first 'checkup.' When calling the office, request extra time with veterinarian, to ask questions, and request tour of the facility. Questions, you should ask the veterinarian:

How many veterinarians are on staff? When your cat needs to be examined or treated, always available a veterinarian?

Will the veterinary facility provide emergency care? Beside normal hours, should be an emergency number to call. Will any member of the staff, open the office for emergencies or provide information to alternative emergency clinic.

Requesting referrals from current cat owners. Often, in many offices, posted cards and letters, from happy clients.

Sometimes, comments are posted, on a website.

Over night staffing, available for sick cats, recovering from surgeries and / or providing kennel services? Critically important to have a trained staff member, available for observation, and provide any necessary care, when veterinarian facility is closed. Also, available to clean and feed cats and other animals. Determine if cats, and other animals are kept separate or in the same area or room.

Will the veterinarian, provide alternative forms of medicine or supplement forms of vitamins. Sometimes, over the counter vitamins, minerals, holistic medicines, and acupuncture effective, treating ailing cats.

Does the veterinarian, offer and accept pet insurance? Certainly, medical insurance for cats, and dogs, offset costs for pet care.

Will the veterinarian, accept credit payment and provide financing or installment plan? This question can be asked over the phone, when speaking to the receptionist or office manager. Remembering cheap or inexpensive services may not always provide, best care. Also, any discounts offered for multiple pets, from the same home, and do senior citizen pet owners, get any discount?

Does your veterinarian sell cat food? Sometimes veterinarians, sell special types of cat foods, more nutritional or healthy, and may not be available, at most pet stores.

Does the veterinarian facility provide, grooming for cats.

Ask the veterinarian, opinion on declawing a cat. Some, cat owner's object and others, favor this surgery, for different reasons.

Is the location near your home, and provides adequate / convenient parking? During an emergency, want to arrive, as soon as possible, and plenty of parking places.

Does the veterinarian or staff, provide any special treatment, including geriatric, and behavior treatment for cats?

Also, staff should be friendly and courteous to pet owners.

Inquire, if pet microchip identification is available. Best method, identifying your cat, when lost or stolen.

Does the veterinarian, offer house calls? This happens rarely, but certainly convenient.

When visiting a veterinarian hospital or office, observe if the entrance, waiting area, and private rooms are kept clean.. Request, tour of the facility, including were cats and/or dogs are kept or care wards, and observe, cages are kept clean. Also, animals are provided plenty of clean water, food, and kept in dry comfortable temperature areas, and no odor is present. Inquire, if air-conditioning and heating is provided, when necessary. Some clinics or veterinarian offices, allow cats freedom to play, and move around, without restrictions. Observe, if each cat, has their own litter box or shared, among other cats, and litter boxes are fresh / clean, for good sanitary effectiveness.

• Jan. 4, 2006 - Kitchen Remodeling Ideas!

                    KITCHEN REMODELING IDEAS!

Your "Dream Kitchen" should be spacious, convenient, easy access to any cooking utensils, durable floor, easy to clean, energy efficient appliances, modern gadgets, modern plumbing, sufficient lightening, and easy access to counter tops. Additional space maybe required for a pantry, hallway, or an adjacent room. Kitchen ventilation system is very important to exhaust rather than re-circulate air, and operate quietly. During the renovation, health hazards could be reduced or eliminated: Remove any asbestos, lead based paints, install water filters, and purchase a fire extinguisher. Some kitchen remodeling plans will move the kitchen, to a better location in the home. Investing money to upgrade a kitchen will definitely increase the resale of your home. According to Remodeling magazine, in 2002 minor kitchen renovations average cost $14,773, and major renovations cost $43,213.

Remember, before remodeling a kitchen: Cover doorways into other rooms with plastic, to avoid dust from entering into other areas of the home. Pack everything including dishes, cups, and utensils into boxes, for temporary storage. Purchase plastic cups, forks, knives and plates for easy dispose, since the kitchen may not be suitable for usage during the remodeling time. If dishes or utensils need to be used, then a bathroom sink or bathtub may serve as place to wash those items. Set up a microwave and refrigerator temporarily in another room. Good time to use restaurant coupons or order out your meals.

When choosing a plumber, electrician or contractor, check their business reputation with the

Better Business Bureau, get references, and see previous work. Make sure all necessary city or county permits are obtained. Make sure these contractors or sub – contractors are insured, and licensed. A Contractor should be paid at most: One Third the cost before any work is started, and should make appoints for city building inspectors to check their work, before continuing onto a new project.

The shape or layout, of the kitchen should be designed according to the efficient use of space, equipment, and how many, using facility of the kitchen. A variety of kitchen shapes have advantages and disadvantages, depending the owner’s preference. Corridor Shape Kitchen: Uses a minimum amount of space, convenient for low traffic corridor thoroughfare, and a minimum of nine feet and five inches between cabinets required, for wheelchair access.

U - Shape Kitchen: Allows, short distance between work centers, and eliminates traffic through work area, and two corner installations have more difficult access for storage. Corridor Shape Kitchen: Useful for more then one person using the kitchen, and difficult access for storage. Island or Broken U - Shape Kitchen: Minimum counter space for island is two feet and six inches by three feet.  Also, space between island and stationary cabinets, should be approximate 36 to 42 inches wide.  Island Space provides additional work - space for any additional shelving, optional plumbing, titled cooking center, additional electrical appliances, second dishwasher, warming oven, or small refrigerator. Multi - Level Island Kitchen: Combines food preparation, eating areas, wine racks, cookbook shelves, bar sinks, deep fryer and other amenities. Multiple Islands: Each Island is designated for a specific use, such as food preparation, or eating convenience. Portable Island provides versatility, and convenience to a kitchen with a freestanding or rolling worktable.

Finished materials are applied when remodeling a kitchen. Have a unique style, configuration, and protect the existing cabinetry from further damage. These finished materials are used for cabinets, countertops, flooring, kitchen sinks, and appliance, which can be purchased or custom built. A contractor or interior kitchen designer can provide samples and pictures, for consideration. Generally there are three finished material options: Plastic laminates, rigid thermofoils (RTF), and wood veneer. Plastic Laminates are sheets of synthetic material that is hard, smooth, resistant from scratches, available in a variety of solid colors, and wood grain looks. Rigid Thermofoil made from medium density one - piece fiberboard wood door. Covered on the front with Rigid Thermo Foil (Formica). These doors are good for applying onto the surface of cabinets, because matching material is available to adhere to cabinet faces, and sides. Wood Veener applied to cabinet surfaces by peeling off the protective adhesive, and carefully line up the veneer onto a surface. Always add an extra inch to wrap around the edge of the surface. Adding a little pressure to the center of the piece will firmly adhere to the application. Also, easy to trim back any excess veneer material.

Preparing meals takes time, and our feet appreciate a comfortable surface to stand on. Standing on tile, may feel very comfortable, but during wintertime or cold climates, the tile becomes ice cold. Installing an electric floor warming will solve this problem. Easy to install, and you can program a thermostat to keep the floor warm any time of the day. 'WarmYours' is a floor heating system: Cost: $1000 to $1,800 a kitchen floor. Information regarding this system by sending an E-mail to: info@warmlyyours.com Or Writing to: WarmlyYours 1400 East Lake Cook Road, Suite 140, Buffalo Grove, Illinois 60089.

Variety of light fixtures, can illuminate one or more areas of a kitchen, provide better lightening when preparing a meal, and set the mood for a romantic meal. Suggestions for convenient kitchen lightening: Placing one or two track lights over the sink, with energy -- efficient compact fluorescent tubes. Installing under -- cabinet task lightening, and low -- voltage mini -- lights over, under or inside cabinets. Dimmer controls provide range of high to low intensity lightening for casual or intimate setting. Also, dimmers extend the life of incandescent lamps and sold in a variety of controls.

When remodeling a kitchen, least expense methods to highlight cabinets: Paint the outside cabinets with splashy colors or use stencil to highlight one or more areas. Upgrade Door Knobs, and locks with a modern or classic design. Remove cabinet doors, for open look inside, and place on the shelves lace or doilies, that flap over the edge, which enhances a new design. Also, consider wall papering the inside of each cabinet.

Trend in kitchen remodeling,  turned the kitchen into the heart of the home. Place where family spends time, and entertains. The popular Food Network Channel, and other similar television programs, has encouraged many to spend more time preparing their own meals, and since many kitchen appliances have become easier to use. Appliances are purchased with "Energy Star" label.  These products exceed the minimum standard for energy conservation standards by 15 to 20 percent, and save money on electricity. Some kitchen remodeling projects, kitchen walls are taken down to provide an open entrance way into the living room. Restaurant quality appliances are being equipped in modern kitchens, including easy -- to -- clean Cook Tops with multiple burners, griddles, dishwashers, and food warmers in drawers. Installing better kitchen lightening including recessed lightening, cabinet lightening, task lighting, and under the counter lightening fixtures with a master control panel. Kitchen appliances such as dishwasher and stove are raised four to five inches from the ground, to avoid having to bend down or prevent back problems. Consider adding child safety locks for appliances, and cabinets. Visiting Kitchen Design Centers or Home Improvement store will provide new ideas, and outline costs for remodeling or upgrade kitchen area. Bring a floor plan to discuss and review design ideas.

Home Improvements

Many homeowners pursue home improvement projects, for different reasons. Replacing fixtures or appliances, updating the home with new decor, or investing money, upgrade or refurbish a home to sell. Certain upgrades or improvements will yield a higher return, while other improvements, may not be desirable, for a buyer. Average return of ninety percent or greater, when investing money, remodeling a kitchen, and adding a bathroom. Less then ninety percent return, when adding a room, remodeling a bathroom, and replacing windows. Adding a swimming pool may not be desirable to perspective buyers, considering, additional maintenance cost. Building a deck or enclosed garage, can add to the value of the home.

A budget should be considered, for home improvement projects. The budget should include some money, set aside, for unexpected, and over budget expenses. If the homeowner, is unable to pay for home improvements, than financial arrangements, maybe considered. Option Number one: Refinancing current mortgage, borrowing money for home improvement or secure a lower interest rate. Assuming, current mortgage has few years to pay off, and the interest rate is at least, two percent below, current mortgage. Option Number two: Take a second mortgage. However, interest rate will be slightly more, than the first mortgage, amount borrowed is a small amount, and will be paid back in less time, than first mortgage. Home equity loan maybe suitable, if the home is debt free of any mortgage. The homeowner can borrow, usually up to 80 percent of the value of the home. Must have a good credit rating, for home equity loan. Option Number three: Using credit card, which provides maximum amount, for unsecured line of credit. However, unsecured credit yields, highest interest rate, and should be paid off sooner than later. The interest rate payment is not deductible. Option Number four: Homeowner has a brokerage account is eligible, for a margin account. The margin account, allows the account holder to borrow money, usually up to fifty percent, value of the brokerage account of securities. However, if brokerage account falls below a certain amount, then client can get a margin call. The client would either pay back loan immediately or sell all securities, in account. Other financial resources include, Government Grants, and securing a loan, from a union bank, only for union members.

Home improvement projects, can sometimes include hiring an architect, Interior designer or contractor for a specific project. Always confirm, choose to hire, has a license from the state or county, and insured for liabilities. Confirm all references, and check with department of building codes for any violations. Always, obtain a written estimate of the costs. Remember, work has to be done, within a reasonable amount of time. Recommend getting referrals, for a contractor, architect or designer.

Home Owners may need landscaping, for a home improvement project. Possibly, adding flowers, shrubs, mowing the lawn, or cutting the edge. A landscaper maybe hired, for more extensive work, including cutting down trees, replacing or moving trees, adding a stone garden or any additions.

Home improvements, can be utilize by saving energy. Installing insulated windows, prevent heat from escaping, and cold from entering the home. Also, insulation in the attic, walls, and floors. Purchasing energy saving hot water heaters, appliances, toilets, that use less water, and installing solar panels, produce electricity, can save money throughout the year. The Federal Government has grants, offering energy efficient homes.

Upgrading the home for safety, for home improvements, very important for health of those living in the residence. Fire Detectors should be installed, outside of each bedroom, and in areas of the home. Checking them twice a year, make sure the batteries are working. Some fire detectors are hooked into the security home system. Also, installing carbon monoxide detectors is an odorless, and tasteless gas. Especially in homes, using gas ranges, and detecting any gas from automobiles parked, from an attached garage.

Other, types of home improvements Including: Purchasing decorative pictures, adding area rugs, posters, new shelves, pillows, and new furniture. Sometimes, simple home improvements have the most dramatic eye catching achievement.

• Jan. 3, 2006 - Maximize Your Chance for Conception - Wanting to Get Pregnant

Maximize Your Chance for Conception – Wanting to Get Pregnant

One of the joyful times, in a relationship or marriage, deciding to have or conceive a baby. Either, that moment in time or sometime, in the near future, reality comes to fruition. Assuming, male and female, are in good health, conception is achievable. Once a month, female hormones, from the pituitary gland, stimulate ovaries, releasing an egg (When two eggs are released, non-identical twins) or ovulate. Unfortunately, irregular periods may decrease fertility. Fertility declines as a woman, gets older. According to National Center of Health and Statistics, women less than, twenty-five years old, have a 96 percent chance of conceiving. Women twenty-five to thirty-four years old, have an 87 percent chance of conceiving, and women, thirty-five to forty-four years old, have a 78 percent chance, for conceiving. Certainly, many methods increase odds of conception, by scientific and medical technology. There are many, pregnancy test kits available, provide almost 100 percent, accurate indication, when a woman, has become pregnant.

Suggestions: Increasing the Odds of Conception

Between, the time, a women has her period or menstrual cycle, a woman can get pregnant. Simply, count the number of days, until the cycle, has ended. Every woman has a different number of cycle days. The cycle days are usually 21 to 35 days. Day one is the observation of red blood, and last day, observing brown or pink spotting. Take total number of days, and subtract by 14 days. Calculated number should be remembered. However, when total number of cycle days, change, from one month to another, harder to calculate. From the calculated number, prior four days and two days afterwards, is the optimal time for conception. However, intercourse every other day (during this time), gives time for the male, increasing sperm supply. Using, an ovulation predictor Kit, provides a more accurate time, when intercourse, should occur. Starting a day early, then calculated, reduces the odds of miscalculation. Sperm can live, in the reproductive tract, up to seventy-two hours.  Thus, starting intercourse, beginning days of optimal time, increasing odds of conception. During the morning hours, sperm count is the highest. During that time or within time frame of days, couple should put aside, their busy schedules or agenda, spending quality time together. Certainly, creating a relaxing and seductive environment, in a peaceful, moment of time. Creating setting, by aromatic candlelight, soft music, and any additional, pleasurable ambiance. According to WebMD.com, 'The Overachiever's Guide to Getting Pregnant Fast’: "Approximately 60% of couples who are actively trying to conceive (having intercourse two to three times a week) will conceive, within the first 6 months of trying, 75% within 9 months, 80% within a year, and 90% within 18 months." Certainly, able to predict the ovulation period of time, helps couples, predetermine the month, child will be born (or multiple births), but certainly, there is no guarantee. According to the Chinese calendar, predicting the birth of boy or girl, high percentage rate of accuracy. Beware, a regimental conception, may cause stress upon woman or male, creating an infertile development. Obviously, exact length of pregnancies, does vary. Often, conception seems to occur, between February and May. Cold climate changes, seems to bond couples, closer and frequently together.

A woman's temperature is higher, during the period of ovulation. A Basal temperature thermometer measures minute changes, in temperature, and has range of a few degrees. When the Basal temperatures, is 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit, considered normal period for ovulation.  Temperatures 97 to 99 Fahrenheit, time after ovulation. However, basal temperatures are not always accurate. Time for ovulation, will not always, indicate an increase in Basal temperature. Many pharmacies, sell Basal temperature thermometers, and available for sale, on the Internet.

Pharmacies, and Internet websites, sell male infertility tests kits. These measure sperm concentration. Test determines, a certain threshold, for a male fertility. Advance tests for male infertility, consulting a physician, for a semen analysis. Recommended, males should not wear briefs or Speedo bathing suits, may reduce sperm count.

Professor A.F. Haney, Obstetrics/gynecology, and chairman of obstetrics/gynecology, at the University of Chicago, Illinois, invented a watch, has a sodium monitor on the back. When sodium level increases, reflects the timing of ovulation. This occurs, when cervical mucus increases, and creates a more pliable and slippery area, facilities ease of more sperm, entering the female reproductive tract. During this time, prevolulatory rise in estrogen, lasting several days. The watch, referred to as OV Watch.

During intercourse, missionary position, conception is more likely.  The woman should be, either laying down or kneeling. In this position, deepest penetration, places the sperm closer to the cervix. This maximizes amount of semen. Lying side-by-side, achieves the same results. However, provides a better relaxing position, when one of the partner's, is overweight or has back pain. After intercourse, the woman should remain in bed, laying on her back and elevating her pelvic region with a pillow, for at least half an hour. According to some experts, in this position, force of gravity, provides sperm additional travel time, reaching the fallopian tubes. However, those women, more likely, getting urinary tract infections, should avoid this position, and go to the bathroom, after intercourse. During intercourse, no conclusive evidence, a woman having an orgasm, will become pregnant.

Smoking Tabacco, changes the cervical mucus, may prevent, sperm from reaching the egg. Also, smoking increases potential, for miscarriage and causing birth defects. Second hand smoke or spending time, near someone that smokes, equally unhealthy.

Women, deciding to discontinue, taking a birth control pill, about half of those women, starting conception, will get pregnant, within first three months, and majority, within twelve months. Women having discontinued, using patches or rings, for birth control, have similar or shorter time to wait, than the pill. Discontinuing the use of Depo-Provera shot or progrestin-only hormonal method, (Delaying fertility), within six months, pregnancy is likely, through normal conception. When Intrauterine devices (IUD) are removed, usually, following first menstrual cycle, pregnancy is feasible.

Fertility institutions provide, advice treatment and alternative solutions, for conception. These alternative solutions include: Egg donation, surrogacy, ovulation induction, vasectomy reversal, and other suggestions. Also, drugs are available to stimulate ovulation, including Clomiphene Citrate, an oral fertility pill, and hormone injections.

• Jan. 3, 2006 - CONTACT LENS

Contact Lenses

Anyone that has vision impairment, wears eyeglasses, has eye problems related to genetic or degenerative eyesight, the resolution for many, by wearing contact lenses. In the United States, 29 Million people wear contact lenses (The Physician's Guide to Eye Care - 2001). Contact lenses or corrective lens are placed on the cornea of the eye. Specialty contact lenses are available in different colors, which can give the person a different look or appearance. Other advantages for contact lenses: No frames to obstruct any view, lenses reduce distortions, lenses do not fog up like glasses, and no rain spots appear. Majority of people can wear contact lenses (80 percent soft lenses), except for some people, that are more likely to develop eye infection, or more sensitive to have a bad reaction. Also, anyone that has diabetes, asthma, dry eyes or plays water sports.

An Optometrist or ophthalmologist determine if wearing contact lenses, effectively improve your vision, and can measure the eyes for a perfect fit. In the United States contact lenses can only be legally purchased, by a valid written prescription from an ophthalmologist. Avoid purchases from the Internet, since many websites are unreliable or do not verify prescriptions. There are different kinds of contact lenses. The doctor provides information how to take care of the contact lenses, and how to insert them into the eyes. Contact lenses are either flipped inside or out. Wearing contact lenses inside out, there is a slight discomfort, and lenses do not fit. Placing a contact lens, on one finger, and observing if there is a perfect half circle, without edge sticking out, then contact lens is fine to insert. Also, if the contact lenses form a "U" with the top edges appear out, then correctly able to insert. Contact lenses are held in place by tears, on the surface of the eye.

 Different types of Contact Lenses:

Hard Contact Lenses are the least type of desirable lenses. These lenses are made of hard plastic material, are either non-gas permeable or gas permeable. Hard Contacts will last five to ten years. Unfortunately hard to insert, take out, and adjust. Non - gas Permeable lenses do not allow oxygen to reach the cornea, which limits the time the lenses can be worn. The longer time oxygen does not pass through the eye, to the cornea may result in eye damage. Gas permeable lenses allow oxygen to flow through the eye to the cornea, which allows for longer use, and more comfort. These lenses tend to cost less over their life span (except up front cost are higher), and a sharper vision than soft contacts. Rigid gas -- permeable lenses are similar to hard contact lenses, except made of better material, allow more oxygen to pass through then soft contact lenses, made of hard plastic which provides a sharp vision, and corrects most vision problems. Require some time to get adjusted, and not recommended for high physical activities

Soft Lenses are made of flexible polymer -- plastic materials, and contain 25 to 79 percent water. Oxygen flows easily to the cornea, and easily adjustable. Offered in a variety of colors, and need to be replaced once a day. These lenses will not last very long, won't correct some vision problems, and not durable. Extended Soft Lenses, allow user to wear them for seven to thirty days. More oxygen passes through the eye to the cornea. Example of these type of lenses: 'Focus NIGHT & DAY' lenses, which capable of using 30 nights of continuous usage. The lenses are made from silicone hydrogel, which allows six times more oxygen to pass through the eye, and less likely to dry up then ordinary soft lenses. Also, these type of lenses are bio – compatible, which decrease protein, and bacteria accumulation, but does not eliminate some from having eye problems wearing this type of soft lenses.

Disposable lenses are used for a limited time, and then discarded. Usually these lenses can be replaced every two weeks, but there are some lenses that can be replaced, after three months. Disposable lenses are more comfortable, and can be worn over night, but need to be cleaned, and disinfected, to prevent eye problems. These lenses are made by companies, which include Johnson & Johnson, and Hydron.

Bifocal contact lenses are available in both soft and rigid gas permeable materials. The lenses are used by those that have presbyopia, which happens when aging eye is unable to focus on near objects. This condition tends to begin around age of 40.

Toric lenses are available for those that have astigmatism (The cornea curvature is asymmetrical, where the eye is shaped like a football or egg, instead of a baseball), can't wear soft lenses. These lenses are available for anyone that has either myobia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), and are kept more stable in the eye, when blinking or looking around. Toric contact lenses, will take longer time to determine the proper fitting, and will cost more then other types of lenses. Toric lenses are available for disposable use, and available in different colors to enhance eye color.

Monovision Contact lenses an alternative to bifocal contacts. The Optometrist fits in one eye contact for near vision, and in the other eye a contact for distance vision. Advantages are a simple fitting and less expensive

Some Contact lenses are manufactured to prevent ultraviolet light. However these contact lenses only cover the cornea, and not the entire eye. Sunglasses can protect the entire eye. Orthokeratolgy reshapes the cornea with contact lenses, worn while sleeping. This treatment helps those that are nearsighted, and have astigmatism. The Food and Drug Administration approved overnight corneal reshaping manufactured lenses by two companies: Bausch & Lomb's new Vision Shaping Treatment (VST), and Cornel Refrective Therapy (CRT) made by Paragon Vision Sciences. Eye professionals that have been certified by either company are authorized to measure anyone, for this type of lenses. Expected by the end of 2005, there will be 2,000 people, fitted corneal reshaping contact lenses. The reshaping of the cornea takes between two to three weeks. Afterwards, contact lenses need to be worn at night or during part of the day, maintain corrective results. Otherwise, cornea will regress to the original shape or closeness. These lenses are not suitable for anyone that wants to eliminate wearing contact lenses. Those that wear these lenses, which will undergo laser eye surgery, are required to stop using the corneal reshaping lenses, possibly for several months, until the cornea regress, back to the normal shape.

Many people, and especially teenagers with perfect vision will wear, colored contact lenses to enhance their appearance. These lenses are available in a variety of colors, which include violet, jade, green or royal blue. During Halloween these colored contact lenses, become more popular. Ciba Vision Company sells Newvues Contact lenses, which are available in different colors.

When cleaning contact lenses, always wash hands first. Use recommended quality eye lenses care products, and clean the lenses as often as possible. Place the contact lenses overnight in a storage case, filled with fresh disinfecting solution.  Also, clean the lens case with a saline solution. When wearing contact lenses, sometimes place drops of lubricate, which keeps the eye moist, and provide more comfort wearing the lenses.

How to Get Back All Your Renter's Deposit

Precautions should be taken, ensure all renter's deposit, returned 100 percent. The guidelines or agreement regarding the renter's deposit, should be clearly written in the lease, under the subheading of 'Security Portion.' The renter should read the lease carefully, and pay attention to the requirements, necessary for refunding the deposit. The landlord should deposit the money into an escrow account, and not mingled, with other monetary assets of the landlord. In some States, the renter will get back the deposit, with any interest, and the landlord will provide the new tenant with a 'move inspection checklist,' be completed, at the time, when moving into the residence. Any prior damages or problems, should be noted, and returned to the landlord. Important, any damages are not listed, could be charged against the tenant’s deposit for repair. Additional measures include, taking pictures of the home, and noting any damages. If the tenant breaks the lease, then the landlord has the right to deduct a portion or keep the entire balance of the renter's deposit.  Always, pay the rent on time, avoid any late fees, could be deducted, from the deposit. Notify the landlord, thirty days before vacancy. Some states have guidelines, notifying the landlord, within a specified number of days, before moving out. Remember, before vacating, always clean, and repair any damages, are else the landlord can deduct the expense of repair, and clean up, against the deposit. Also, return all keys to the landlord, including any keys to facilities, in the building. Physically hand over the keys to the landlord, and do not simple leave keys inside an addressed envelope or someone else, since the keys may get lost.  Any keys not returned, landlord may charge, replace those keys or locks against the amount of the deposit. Provide landlord forwarding mailing address, where renter's deposit can be send. After vacating the residence, the renter's deposit, should be mailed within thirty days. Trying to avoid, any problems the landlord, may claim against damages or cleanness of the apartment or home, by tenant walking through the dwelling with the landlord for an inspection, before or soon after vacating. In the State of Florida, the landlord is required by law to notify within 15 days (after vacancy) the previous tenant, by certified mail, reasons for any deductions, from the security deposit or return the deposit.

When the Landlord does not return, renter's deposit, within 30 days, following steps should be considered. First: Write a letter to the landlord. Specifically outline what you want, in a polite and concise manner. Also, what you will pursue legally, if the deposit is not returned within a specified number of days. Consider, sending this letter by return receipt. If the landlord deducts any amount, from the renter's deposit, the landlord must provide, a written receipt or outlined cost, for any charges. The previous tenant may pursue legal actions. First: In Small Claims Court, and contacting an attorney, for breach of contract.  When going to Small Claims court, tenant should bring a receipt, showing the payment of the deposit, copy of the rental agreement, photographs before and after, moving into the residence, any signed document, by the landlord upon inspection, of the dwelling, for any damages, prior to moving, into the home. Also, copy of the letter: Requesting the deposit, any other relevant documents, and witnesses. In some states, landlord would pay for any punitive damages, if money was withheld, in bad faith, and in the State of Florida landlord (which may apply in other states) pays, tenant's court costs.  Also, The Resident Solutions Group helps renters, claim their renter's deposit, and provide a guarantee. • Jan. 3, 2006 - HEARING AIDS - CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Hearing Aids – Do You Hear Me Now?

Hearing is one of the most important senses, we use each day. Hearing impacts our life's in communication, personal relationships, and over -- all quality of life. Loss of hearing can be attributed to age, exposure to loud noise, medication, infections, head or ear trauma, congenital or hereditary factors, and diseases. Ninety to ninety -- five percent of hearing loss can be corrected, by a hearing aid. A small percentage of people will need surgery, correct this problem. In 2005, 31.5 Million people in the United States have hearing loss. One-third of all seniors, over 75 years old have a hearing loss, and fourteen percent of people aged between 45 to 64 years old. Third most chronic condition exists in older Americans. Most common signs of hearing loss include: Strain to understand, when someone is speaking, frequently ask to repeat, what someone said, play the radio or television louder than other's need to hear, can't hear the doorbell or telephone ring, and hearing only "mumble" of words spoken. Audiologist evaluates patients for hearing loss, by audiometric evaluation (AE). This test determines the exact type, and degree of hearing loss. Also, tells the audiologist, how well or poorly understand speech. Audiologist examines the ear canal and eardrum. If any medical or surgery is required, the audiologist will refer the patient to an ear, nose and throat doctor. Hearing aids are useful for patients, having permanent hearing loss. According to a study, in the November 2004 issue of 'Archives of Otolaryngology,' there is no link between smoking and hearing loss.

Causes hearing loss: Most common hearing loss is Sensorineural, which 90 percent of all hearing aid wearers attribute their hearing loss. Common causes for Sensorineural: age, noise exposure, poor blood circulation in the inner ear, inner ear fluid disturbance, and problems associated to hearing nerve. Conductive hearing loss occurs, when sound is not conducted efficiently through the ear canal, eardrum or tiny bones of the middle ear, resulting in the reduction of loudness of sound. Causes of Conductive hearing loss: Earwax blocking the ear canal, middle ear infection, fluid in the middle ear, obstruction of the ear canal, perforations in the eardrum, and any disease effecting the three middle ear bones. Those experiencing this problem will often stop, chewing on food, to hear what is being said or when eating crunchy foods, sound will be very loud. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of Sensorineural and Conductive hearing loss. Temporary Hearing loss: Exposure to loud sounds, wax in the ear or ear infection.

Transistors made by American Telephone and Telegraph created the foundation, which helped to produce the first variety of hearing aids. In 1952, companies sold a variety of hearing aids, which operated by a transistor, and vacuum tubes. These companies included: Germanium Products Corporation and Maico Company. The price of a hearing Aid started around $229.50, and then competition price fell to $74.50. These hearing aids powered by batteries, worn around the waist. The price of these batteries, eventually fell from $100 to ten dollars.

Two types of hearing aid technology: Analog and Digital. Analog Hearing Aids -- Offers limited capability too hear sound. Digital Hearing Aids -- Provides the audiologist maximum control over sound quality / sound processing, and in 2005, Seventy - seven percent satisfaction by users.

Hearing Aids have Four Components: Microphone - Receives sound and converts it into electrical impulses. Amplifier - Intensifies the electrical impulses. Receiver - translates those electrical impulses into louder sounds. Battery - Power source for the hearing aid.

Four Basic types of hearing aids: Conventional - Adjusting the incoming sound volume, and cost between: $395 -- $900. Programmable Analog - Programmed by a computer, to match the person's hearing loss. Has flexibility, and automatic volume control. This type of hearing aid cost between: $1,300 to $1,700. Digital - Automatically adjust to multiple listening, and sound environments. The signal is clearer than other types of hearing aids, no distortion noticeable, and price range from $1,700 to $4,750. Furthermore soft sounds are distinguished from loud sounds, clarity is enhanced. Disposable hearing aid: Patients having mild to moderate hearing loss, "one size fits all" for 80 percent of men and 60 percent of women, expected to last between 30 to 40 days, purchased by prescription, no batteries to change, and cost usually less than $40 a piece. Manufactures of disposable hearing aid include the Songbird 400 Hour Digital Hearing Aid / 90-day battery life.

Different styles of hearing aids available based upon preference. Completely - in -- the Canal (CIC) - For mild to moderate hearing loss, smallest type of device, almost invisible when placed in the ear, and unfortunately difficult to insert and adjust. In-the - Canal (ITC) - Mild to moderate hearing impairment, larger then CIC, fits down in the canal of the ear, and some degree unnoticeable. In - the Ear (ITE) - Available for a variety of hearing impairments, fill the 'bowl' of the ear, larger sound amplifiers, manufactured in large custom made styles, and easier to use than CIC and ITC devices. Mini - Canals (MC) - Size between ITC and CIC, smallest hearing aid, and tiny volume wheel. Behind - the - Ear (BTE) - Useful for sever hearing impairments, and dexterity problems, circuitry and microphone fit behind the ear, largest hearing device, maximum power, flexibility in fitting, least expensive, custom made from an ear impression, and very good for children. Post-auricular -- canal -- instrument (PAC) - Newest hearing aid that physically separates the processor from the receiver / speaker. The processor is placed behind the ear, and the receiver / speaker is placed deep in the ear canal. Binaural Hearing Aid (both ears) - In 2005, 86 percent of new hearing aid wearers fitted for binaural. Two hearing aids are necessary to compare and contrast loudness, pitch, and phase (timing) of the sounds, and make sense of the surroundings. The audiologist will advise on the type of devise, fitting, provide information on the use, and adjustments for appropriate level of loudness. Also, will teach how to insert, and care. Follow - up visits will be necessary to perform any maintenance repair, and any adjustments to enhance the performance.

Cochlear hearing implants are for patients that have severe, to profound hearing loss. In the United States approximately 500,000 people suffer from this hearing loss. These patients have previously tried other hearing aids, with no success. As of 1999, an estimated 32,000 patients worldwide have received cochlear implants. The devise is surgically and permanently implanted into the inner ear, by otolaryngology surgeon. Most insurance companies pay for this procedure. The Cochlear implants bypass the nonfunctional inner ear, and converts sound into electrical impulses, that directly stimulate, the cochlear nerve. Some patients will have a cochlear implant in one ear, and have a hearing aid worn, in the other ear. The degree of success using this device will be dependent, upon the recipient. Majority of these patients, were previously deaf prior to implantation. The cost for this devise ranges from $40,000 to $50,000. Sometimes Cochlear implants have to be removed. Following reasons: Body can reject the implant, skin flap can become infected, the implant receiver can extrude, electrode array can get damaged or were not implanted correctly, electrode array can move out of alignment or simply does not work. According to Cochlear lmplant Organization, two percent of these implants experience failure, and have to be removed. The Food and Drug Administration has a list of Cochlear implants that failed.

Batteries for hearing aid last between seven to fourteen days, based on a sixteen hour per day use. Cost of hearing aid batteries, are less than one dollar each. Smaller batteries will have a shorter battery life. Batteries are package in 'zinc -- air," which become active, when removed from the sticker.  When oxygen in the air, contacts the zinc within a battery, which will activate the battery to function. Shelf life for hearing aid batteries is up to three years, if stored in a cool and dry environment (Not in a refrigerator).

Further information on hearing aids: The cost for a hearing aid maybe covered, by some insurance companies. Medicaid does cover the cost of hearing aids. If a hearing aid is well maintained by keeping clean, dry, and changing batteries, should last between five to seven years. A Dry - Aid Kit will provide the necessary cleaning, for a hearing aid. The kit contains germicidal light that kills most bacteria, and other germs that accumulate on a hearing aid. Also keeping the hearing aid in the Dry - Aid Kit over -- night. Telephone Ear pads are foamed pad that adheres to the telephone receiver, which helps hearing aid users, from hearing any feedback (whistling). Hearing Aid Battery Testers are pocket size tests, for hearing aid batteries strength. AdHear Cerumen Guards firmly sticks over the hearing aid. This prevents wax, and debris from entering thus preventing damaging, to the electronics, of the hearing aid.

• Jan. 3, 2006 - TELEPATHY

Telepathy

Mind to mind communication or dialogue, between two or more minds, without any verbal words spoken, is psychic phenomena, known as telepathy. The depth of this type of communication is transfer of thoughts, ideas, feelings, sensations or mental images. In 2005, Gallup poll showed thirty-one percent, believe in telepathy, compared 36 percent, fifteen years earlier. Telepathy is a form of Extra Sensory Perception (ESP), and the "sixth sense." In the Kabbalah and Hassidism beliefs, power of thought is considered, highest of three powers of the psyche: Thought, speech, and action. As well, Channeling and telepathy are similar, by receiving transmission and information, from nonphysical being. Common, form of telepathy occurs spontaneously, during a crisis situation, in a situation of injury or danger, using telepathic communication to a friend or relative. After receiving a telepathic message, recipient may alter their daily schedule or travel plans, call to inquire or contact other person. Other situations, thinking about someone, you haven't thought about in a long time. Then person calls, whether being a coincidence or telepathic phenomena. Highest percentage of telepathic ability occurs 68 percent of the time, between identical twins, followed by brothers or sisters. Other forms of telepathy include, communicating with a deceased person, relative, friend or animal.

Research of mind communication, started by Society of Psychical Research, founded in 1882, studies psychic or paranormal phenomena. Their early studies, reported in 1886, in a two volume work "Phantasms of the Living," introduced the term 'telepathy," replacing an earlier term "thought transference." One of their experiments: A person in one room tried to transmit a two-digit number, a taste or visual image, to a receiver (person), in another room. Dr. Rupert Sheldrak, author and natural scientist with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, developed various experiments (www.sheldrake.org/experiments), which examines ability of telepathy. One of these experiments: Looking at photograph of a person, who is seated, in another room. Trying to send a telepathic message, to that person. Throughout history, telepathy has been referred: The power of the "third eye."

Studying telepathy has presented, interesting observations. Women are more likely, receivers of telepathic communication. Possible explanation, women are more in touch with their emotions, and rely more, on their intuition, than men. Monitoring electroencephalogram brain activity, during telepathic phenomena, shows blood volume changes occur, for both recipient and sender. Dissociative drug reduce or block, signals to the conscious mind, from parts of the brain. Primary sources of dissociative, found in cough syrup, and nitrous oxide, adversely affect telepathic communication. However, caffeine has stimulating affect, on telepathy. Sometimes, meditation or Yoga with a partner, stimulate telepathic communication, between sender and receiver. Having a positive mental and physical attitude, telepathic communication is more likely enhanced. However, being tired, sick or depressed makes psychic perceptions, difficult to achieve, and mistakes or misperceptions occur. Having mental discipline, stop receiving or limiting telepathic communication, referred to as Mind Shield. Using telepathic communication to get into someone else’s mind, by providing disorienting, damaging or interfering thoughts, creating telepathic warfare. Developing skills of telepathy, easiest to start, mind communication with a relative or family member. Cultivating this ability, takes time, and some people are better receivers, while others are better senders. Distance has no barring on telepathy, for recipient or receiver, could be standing, halfway around the world. Furthermore, appears telepathic communications occurs at the speed of light. Foremost, famous mentalist, is 'The Amazing Kreskin,' has amazed audiences, ability to utilize telepathy.

Many telepathic methods for communicating: Emotional telepathy tune to feelings of emotions, including stress, depression, and frustration. Interior telepathy communications between a person's soul and mind or between soul, mind and brain. Mental telepathy is communication of one mind, with another, than through the channels of senses. Communicating with animals using telepathy, by exchanging pictures, thoughts, words, emotions, and feelings. According to Animal Communicator, Debbie McGillivray (Website: http://www.animaltelepathy.com), she is able to use her telepathic ability, to communicate with horses, and other animals. Also, Leslie Poms (http://lesliepoms.com) has the same telepathic ability, communicating with animals, and Cindy Wenger (http://www.peaceablekingdomac.com).
