| Dating from the 11th century, and the exquisite green gold-domed Cathedral of St. Sophia was a major center of Soviet Russia. It has been damaged and repaired over the years, and today is a mix of different architectural styles from nine centuries. Perhaps one of the most striking features of the cathedral is an impressive collection of frescoes and Byzantine mosaics, dating back to its inception. The cathedral also serves as a living text, hundreds of pieces of graffiti on the political and historical events through the centuries are still visible today. |
